Last Full Day

 As much as I wanted to see the eagles again, the thought of being cold and having to fight to put on the body suit was too much to entice me out of my warm bed.  I made the call the night before and about half of my fellow travelers did the same.  The ones that went out were richly rewarded with much better skies and no rain.  I saw several shots with two of them perhaps swooping in for the same chum.  I would just have to be satisfied with the photos I got the first day out.

For those of us that stayed behind, Tamara did a quick demo of some of the things you can do in post-processing in Photoshop and also On1.  You can tell she comfortable in both, zooming around the menus and improving the photos without making them look unnatural. I know my skill level is on the basic side in PS but I now have an idea of what can be done which (may) inspires me to go home and develop my skills.

This afternoon we met for one final time to look at any new photos that people wanted critiqued.  Joe also gave a brief presentation of how light can make or break a photo.  His years of experience are clearly present in the photos he showed.  He’s a master storyteller both with photos and words.  

With a little time before our final dinner we took the opportunity to pack in anticipation of an early start on our travels back to Oslo.  Somehow, even though we really had not purchased much to bring home, we had expanded our luggage by at least three bags.  I think exhaustion won out over efficiency.

We had our final group dinner in the hotel restaurant, taking our dessert in the conference room so we could view the slide show put together for us.  This is always a favorite part of any photo trip getting to celebrate our successes behind the lens.  There were toasts to our leadership team and promises of future trips together.  What a fun group!

Little Red Houses and Vikings

We were pleased to find that our hotel carried on the tradition of a bountiful breakfast that we found in Oslo with the addition of a pianist entertaining us during our meal.  The downside was the popularity of the hotel which often meant fighting your way to the buffet. Boarding the bus mid-morning we drove along a stunning coast line with snow covered jagged peaks and clear green waters.  It’s hard for me to think these peeks are at sea level and that the water is not an alpine lake.  The next corner tops the first and so on and so on. There’s a famous photo of Norway with a row of red houses and a beautiful mountain providing the background.  Black rocks surrounded by ice waters are in the foreground.  We drove specifically to the Reine to take home this shot.  However, blowing winds filled with snow partially blocked the mountain and made the photo a little less than ideal.  We hung around hoping for it to clear but we finally boarded the bus for o...

To the North Lands

We had an early start to our day for our journey up north where we will hopefully find the elusive Northern Lights.  We first flew to Bodo on SAS and then transferred to a much smaller turboprop to Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands.  The first thing I noticed as we proceeded through security to our gate is that my ID was never checked, not once, only my boarding pass for the plane.  I mark this off to an honest population or naivety.    After landing in Bodo we heard flight cancelations over the intercom but ours was still going.  We had to walk to the plane in blowing snow which made me wonder about the wisdom of actually leaving.  The pilot reassured us somewhat with the caveat that he can’t land in certain conditions.  Off we go! Surprisingly the flight was pretty smooth and we arrived with no issues. The Long Trip Home

 Annie arranged for the restaurant to open at 6:30 so we could have a meal before our 7:30 departure.  A bus transported us the short way to the airport where the single gate agent began weighing and tagging our luggage.  We met up on the other side to wait for our plane that would to us to Bodo where we would switch to a larger plane for our flight to Oslo.  We only had fifteen minutes to switch planes, which sounds like a tight connection but the airport is small and proved to not be an issue. Upon landing in Oslo we said our goodbyes while people went their separate ways.  We made the executive decision to stay at the airport hotel,  The  Radison Blu  was steps away from the airport which meant we could sleep a little longer tomorrow.  After dropping our bags, we took the very efficient train located right outside the hotel to Oslo so we could collect our bags we had left a week ago.  Before hand, we had our lunch/dinner at Olivia a b...
