Hitting the Streets of Oslo

Jet lag hit me a little today. When the alarm went off this morning I was in the middle of a dream (a kids birthday party???) and took a couple of minutes to remember where I was and why.

After another bountiful breakfast, we gathered for our first class with Joe McNally and Tamara Lackey, our leaders for the next 10 days.  This session introduced us to what we’ll encounter during the workshop and helped us with any of our gear issues.

Three ladies guided us on a walk to the Askersus Fortress.  The streets heading to the fortress are stone which helped with traction on the ice patches.  It was a short walk, but somehow photographers can stretch  10 minute to 30 without blinking an eye.  Climbing up the fortress walkways we came upon an overlook which gave us a lovely view of the port.  Luckily, we also came upon a 21 canons military salute for the King's birthday with ear splitting blanks.

Next we stopped at the Town Hall where the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded.  All the other Nobel prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden.  The giant hall just past the entrance is decorated with wall high murals.

Wondering back into the town center, we arrived at our lunch spot, Elias Mat & Sant, for a lovely meal.  Starting with a cured meat appetizer, the main of chicken leg confit followed with a pan a cotta for dessert.

Joe did a quick lighting demo in the park across from our hotel.  With the sun shining, the streets filled with people strolling the streets.  After the demo, we did a little souvenir shopping at none other than The Souvenir Store across the street.  I strolled around a couple of the pedestrian streets afterwards to get a better feel for the city.  Even though Oslo is really no larger than Tulsa at around 640,0000 they have one street lined with Dior, Channel, Jimmy Choo, and their cousins.  This is obviously enough of a tourist destination to support them.

Dinner was at ‘an American’ pizza place across the part.  It served its purpose of allowing us to not go to bed hungry.

Tomorrow: Ballerinas and Opera
